Side Reins and Draw Reins

Using side reins or draw reins can help you effectively train your horse to give to pressure. Both of these types of horse training devices are perfect for teaching young or green horses as well as retraining horses who have learned to lean on or evade the bit.

Advanced riders can help their horse maintain steady contact on the bit so they learn how to work in a frame.

Side Reins vs. Draw Reins

While both horse side reins and draw reins have similar purposes, they are each designed for different uses:

  • Side reins: Side reins are designed to be used only when you are working your horse from the ground. They attach onto the bit and then clip onto the surcingle. Side reins can come in a variety of materials ranging from leather to nylon with elastic. Regardless of the material, though, their design ensures they deliver light contact and allow the horse to move into the bridle.
  • Draw reins: Draw reins, unlike side reins, can be used while you are riding. Just like with side reins, though, you clip them onto the bit and attach them onto the girth. This setup allows you to maintain contact while you are training your horse.
