Riding Helmets

While horseback riding is one of the most enjoyable pastimes, it can also be one of the most dangerous without adequate protection. After all, whether you ride English or western, your equine partner could spook, trip, bolt, buck or rear without warning, potentially causing a serious accident. These risks are present whether you are riding your trusty quarter horse down a familiar trail or taking your young thoroughbred out on the cross-country course for the first time.

Because equestrians face these risks any time they climb into the saddle, it's crucial to take the necessary precautions with protective riding gear.

The Importance of Choosing Quality, High-Performance Protective Gear

Riding helmets and vests are two essential types of protective gear. Riding helmets are designed to protect your head from falls while body protector equestrian vests protect your internal organs, spine and ribs. Because both riding helmets and vests guard your vital body parts, it's important to choose top-quality, high-performance gear.

Specifically, you want to choose a helmet that has the ASTM/ SEI seal of approval. To achieve this rating, helmets need to undergo various trials — including the Pointed Anvil Test and the Helmet Retention Test — to ensure they provide thorough protection.

How to Choose the Right Helmet

Whether you ride English or western, the first thing that you want to do is check the helmet's equestrian safety standards and ensure it has the ASTM/ SEI seal of approval. Then, you can start narrowing down your style options. Some helmet brands like Troxel and Ovation manufacture a wide variety of helmets designed for everyday riding, while other brands such as Charles Owen focus more on show helmets. Some brands also offer various cuts like round or oval to fit a variety of head shapes.

How to Fit a Helmet

While it's important to choose a helmet that meets the proper equestrian safety standards, you also need to make sure the helmet actually fits you to receive full protection. Something as simple as wearing your hair up or down can affect the fit — and protection — of your helmet. To make sure you get the right size, follow these quick and easy measuring tips:

  • Wrap a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your head.
  • Make sure the tape measure stays over your hair and is about 3/4 inches above your eyebrows.
  • Note the measurement and remeasure again to ensure you have an accurate number.
  • Some helmets will use either inches or centimeters for their sizes, so you may need to convert to get the right measurement.

Overall, the perfect riding helmet should fit snug so you feel an even pressure all around your head.
