Horse Blankets

As the days start getting shorter and the temperatures begin to drop, it's time to start thinking about preparing your barn for the winter season. Having quality horse blankets on hand is a great way to make sure you're ready for whatever nature throws at you. With all of the different types, fills and styles of blankets, however, it can be hard to know which to choose. Check out some of our helpful tips to help you decide.

Types of Horse Sheets and Blankets

When you are shopping for horse blankets, it's important to keep in mind the difference between a stable and a turnout blanket. Because stable blankets aren't waterproof, they are designed to be worn only inside the barn. On the other hand, turnout horse blankets are waterproof, and they're designed to keep your horse warm and dry when in the pasture.

Both types of blankets come in different thicknesses, including:

Light

A light horse stable or turnout sheet has 0-100 grams of fill on average. These blankets can be used as a rain sheet or worn when the weather is dry but chilly.

Medium

A medium horse stable or turnout sheet offers added warmth with 150-250 grams of fill.

Heavy

A heavy stable or turnout blanket has the most fill, usually containing over 300 grams. These blankets are designed for freezing temperatures.

When Should I Blanket My Horse?

Any time the temperature dips below freezing, especially if there's precipitation involved, a blanket is worth considering. Ultimately, the answer depends on your horse's condition, where you live and what the weather is typically like during the winter. Most horses will grow a thick winter coat, but they do sometimes need extra help to stay warm and comfortable as the temperatures start dropping.

Along with taking the weather forecast into consideration, be sure to consider your horse's:

  • Age.
  • Overall health and body condition.
  • Coat length.
  • Living conditions.

Is your horse clipped, or do they have a full winter coat? Are they turned out 24/7 or stalled? Is there a shelter in the pasture? These factors all play into when you need to blanket your horse. How to Choose the Right Horse Blanket

After you've decided whether you need a stable sheet or turnout blanket — or both — it's important to find the right fit so your horse stays warm and safe during the winter.

To measure your horse, make sure they are standing square and then take a tape measure or string and place it in the center of their chest. Then, while keeping the tape measure tight, go along the widest part of the shoulder and measure to the center of their tail. Once you have the right size, make sure the body and leg straps are adjusted so they don't hang down too low.
