Tips for Staying Cool During Your Ride

by Alexa Gohn

Summer is here, which means the days are now longer and there are more opportunities to spend time with your horse. While summer is a popular season to ride, train and show, staying out in the heat can come with the risk of several harmful consequences, including sunburn, dehydration and heatstroke.

3 Tips on How to Stay Cool While Riding

Getting ready to head out to the barn to feed, muck or saddle up? Check out three tips on how you can stay cool while riding all summer long.

1. Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

If possible, avoid riding or working outside during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, the sun's rays are at their strongest, putting you at increased risk for heat-related health issues.

If you can't avoid this time frame, though, consider beating the summer heat by going trail riding with some of your friends. You'll still be enjoying time in the saddle, but will be staying much cooler as you leisurely walk through the woods.

2. Wear Cooling Clothing

When you plan on working at the barn or riding during the summer, choose light-colored clothing that is designed with moisture-wicking properties. There are several technical fabrics that are specifically designed to help you manage your temperature and wick sweat away from your skin. One fabric that accomplishes this goal is Kerrits Ice Fil. When you wear their Ladies Cool Ride Ice Fil Tank to the barn, this lightweight fabric will help absorb sweat and lower your skin's temperature up to 5 degrees.

For bottoms, choose breathable, stretchy fabrics like tights or ventilated breeches. There are also plenty of colorful Kerrits Ladies Ice Fil Full Seat Tech Tights to choose from that are designed to keep you cool and comfortable in the saddle all summer long.

While many helmets already have built-in ventilation, adding an Equivisor Sun Protection Helmet Visor can help protect your face from the sun's rays and reduce glare when riding.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

If you'll be out in the summer heat, be sure to start hydrating before, during and after you are at the barn. If you start working up a sweat when you're doing chores or riding, sip on a drink with electrolytes to replace those that you've lost.
