Sun Protection While Riding

Sun Protection While Riding

by Alexa Gohn

During the summer months, training, camps, clinics and shows fill up many equestrians' schedules. Whether you are riding or tackling your barn chores, all these outdoor activities and tasks mean you'll be spending a lot of time out in the sun.

Because of the risks of sun exposure, it's important to make sure you are protected each time you head out to the barn.

Risks of Sun Exposure When Riding

While sunshine is a great source of vitamin D, it also gives off harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays, which are a form of radiation, have the ability to go through your skin and damage or even kill your skin cells.

This exposure can lead to sunburns, sunspots, wrinkles and premature skin aging. Time spent in the sun without protection can also increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Both basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) tend to occur on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun. Similarly, the chances of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, are higher when skin has been sunburned.

How to Stay Protected From the Summer Sun

When you are out riding in the sun, there are several ways you can cover up and protect yourself. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe this summer:

  • If possible, try to avoid riding or being out at the barn when the sun's rays are the strongest. This time frame is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you can't avoid being out then, try to minimize direct sun exposure and spend as much time in the shade as possible.
  • Apply sunscreen to all areas of your skin that will be exposed to the sun, includes spots like your ears or the back of your neck. Make sure to reapply it every couple of hours, especially if you've been sweating a lot.
  • Wear protective clothing and accessories. Equestrians have several stylish long-sleeve shirt and pant options that can help protect them from the sun's rays. Some of these clothing items even offer ventilation and "cooling" benefits to help keep you comfortable. Don't forget to accessorize and wear a hat and sunglasses for additional protection.
