Winter riding is inevitable; unlike other sports where it’s easy to leave your equipment in the garage and wait for spring, we equestrians know that we have a horse or pony waiting for us at the stable. That means trudging to the barn in high wind, snow or rain, even when it’s 20 below. Whether this is your first winter riding in the cold or you’re a cold weather pro, we’ve compiled a list of horseback riding essentials to get you through even the toughest of winters. Plus you can use the promo code "LoveTheRide" upon checkout at Horse Tack Co. to receive 15% off of your order, all the time and anytime (some restrictions on brands do apply)!
The Things You Need…..
A Good Waterproof Jacket- A good jacket is a fundamental part of your winter riding gear. Our favorite is the Kerrits Ladies Precip Waterproof Jacket. It is wind AND waterproof, with the seams sealed against the elements, and a stow-away hood that cinches in to keep you dry. The three-season shell is lightly lined and delivers everything you need in the saddle: a two-way zipper with a quick-close, magnetic storm flap, double-vent split back, multiple external pockets and a tall collar lined with cozy fleece.
Wool Socks- A dedicated pair of winter riding boots isn’t always in the budget, but a few pairs of soft wool blend socks from Kerrits certainly are. The merino wool blend gives these snuggly socks an unbelievable soft feel that keeps feet happy and toes warm.
Warm Waterproof Rubber Boots- If your horse lives outside you know the struggle of sloshing through the mud and snow. Luckily the Mountain Horse Winter High Rider Riding Boots will keep the freezing water out and keep your feet warm and comfortable. The Active Winter Rider has a faux fur lining, a waterproof upper and is strong and durable.
Warm, Weather Resistant Gloves- A good pair of winter riding gloves is worth its weight in gold. We love the Heritage Spectrum Winter Gloves because they are designed to block-out wind and moisture while keeping you warm.
Long Sleeve Riding Shirt- The key to staying warm while winter riding is lots and lots of layers. Start with a thin long sleeve shirt like the Kerrits Ice Fil to add warmth without adding bulk. The same wicking technology that makes this shirt key to summer comfort makes it just as important in winter. Ice Fil® pulls the sweat away from your skin so you’ll never feel cold and clammy.
Helmet Cover- Is there anything worse than having cold ears? It doesn’t help that most helmets offer no protection from the cold winter air. Luckily, we have a solution for you. The Exselle Winter Riding Helmet Cover is designed to cover your helmet and keep your neck and ears toasty. Made with a Lycra top and a soft polo fleece bottom. Plus it's fully adjustable- score
Winter Breeches- While you may be able to get through winter just fine in your regular breeches, we bet once you slip on a pair of fleece lined riding tights you won’t be able to go back. Check out the Kerrits Ladies Sit Tight Wind Pro Knee Patch Tights. They are protected by Polartec® Windpro® with a cozy fleece lining. These warm winter riding pants resist wind, sleet, and snow but not movement, freeing you to trot through winter without restriction.
A Warm Hat- The Kerrits Frosty Morning Knit Hat locks in heat with its fleece-lined interior that wicks sweat. Designed with a low-profile brim it's a stylish solution to winter post-ride helmet hair.
The Things You Never Knew You Needed featuring Heat Activated Goods from ThermaFur with Heat Pax that last for 24+ hours
Scarf- Scarves obviously keep your neck toasty warm, but the ThermaFur fleece lined warming winter scarf comes with 3 individual Heat Pax Hand Warmers that can be placed in a pocket in the middle of the scarf.
Self Heating Vest- Extra chilly days call for layers. The ThermaFur Fleece Heating Soft Shell Vest is the perfect layer for under your jacket. It comes with a total of 8 built in heat pax body warmer pockets.
A Self Heating Ball Cap- The Thermafur Fleece Heating Baseball Cap will keep your head nice and toasty with a pocket above each ear for the Heat Pax.
Self Heating Gloves- Techniche ThermaFur Heating Sport Gloves are waterproof outer with traction grips on the palm, index finger and thumbs. They come with a dual pocket system for two options for the placement of Heat Pax air activated hand warmers.
