Essentials for Your Child's First Riding Lesson

by Alexa Gohn

Signing your child up for horse riding lessons is a big deal. After all, it could be the start of a lifelong passion that encourages them to stay active while building character qualities like dedication and perseverance.

While this is a fun and exciting time, there are a few essentials you'll need to have before you head off to the barn for your child's first riding lesson.

How to Prepare for Your Child's First Riding Lesson

Whether they'll be riding English or Western, young children will need some basic clothing to stay safe and comfortable in the saddle. While the specific types and styles of apparel and accessories can vary based on each riding discipline, many beginners start off using the basics.

A beginner kit for horse riding lessons should include:

Riding Helmet

Every child should be wearing a well-fitting helmet every time they ride. Before you buy one, make sure that it is ASTM/SEI certified, which means it was specifically tested and approved to meet horseback riding safety standards.

Instead of purchasing a show helmet, beginners can start off in a schooling helmet, which is designed to be more simple and budget-friendly for everyday riding.

Tops

While your child's top should be comfortable, you want to make sure it's not too loose or baggy, as excess fabric could flop around and get caught on things while they are riding. If possible, stick with more form-fitting tops instead.

Breeches or Jeans

Depending on if your child is taking an English or Western riding lesson, they can choose to wear either breeches or jeans. There are several different styles, colors and features available designed to help riders stay comfortable and love the ride. Some breeches, for example, feature a silicone grip to help keep riders secure in the saddle.

Boots

Before your child's lesson, make sure they have appropriate footwear for riding. You'll want to ensure their boots have a heel style that will easily slip in and out of the stirrups, which will keep them from getting caught up or dragged if they fall off.

There are several options available, ranging from paddock boots to cowboy boots, that will help keep your child's feet in the stirrups safely.

Accessories

Along with the essentials, there are different accessories that could enhance the safety and comfort of your child's first riding lesson. To prevent calluses and create a secure grip, consider riding gloves. Also, if your child is interested in jumping or doing cross country, you might invest in a riding vest for additional protection.
