Conquer Your Fear of Chemicals For Your Horse and You

by Jordan Manfredi
If you hadn’t already noticed, fly season is here. My mare, Hannah sure has noticed; the constant stomping, head tossing, and ear twitching has begun. If you are like me, you probably approach the summer dreading the inevitable cloud of chemical fly sprays because you know that not only are they unhealthy for you and your horses, they smell awful and they don’t work for very long, if they work at all. I have a very sensitive, thin-skinned thoroughbred mare that reacts to nearly all products that I have used on her. Last spring, she broke out in hives and lost patches of hair after reacting to a mix of fly spray and bug bites, so I am invested in finding an all-natural and safe pest-control option. Screen Shot 2016-06-20 at 8.46.22 PM I finally discovered an all-natural fly spray that actually works. It’s called Clear Choice Natural Fly Spray and I have been using it for about a month. Here’s what I love about it: - All natural ingredients that I can read (and pronounce) on the label – really! -It smells amazing -Hannah has had no reactions whatsoever to the spray anywhere on her body -I use the spray on her and the bugs actually seem to stay off of those areas -Her coat is super-shiny! Ingredients on the label, which are a blend of natural oils that help moisturize the coat, include:Screen Shot 2016-06-20 at 8.45.50 PM
  • Thyme oil
  • Cedar oil
  • Lemongrass oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Citronella
  • Clove oil
  • Geraniol
As you can see from the photos, Hannah is glossy and bug-free. I’ve been very pleased with the performance of the Clear Choice Fly Spray, as well as their shine and detangling spray, which I have also been using on her tail post-bath with great results. If you’re looking to avoid harsh chemicals like I am, I highly recommend the entire Clear Choice line of Products. About the Author: Stacy Bromley Cheetham, MPA grew up riding horses.
